How to open and install additional Memory and Hard Drive to Asus Vivobook X510

Can i upgrade my Asus VivoBook X510? That's the question! Good news with this laptop is that you can pretty much upgrade anything on it, except CPU of course because most new laptops come with processors soldered on to the motherboard and this notebook is no exception.

Have to say it's a great laptop for the price and is packed with loads of great features: Full HD 15.6" screen, Quad Core Intel Core i7 CPU (8th gen), Dual Graphics (Intel UHD Graphics 620 + 2GB Nvidia GeForce 940MX), Backlit Keyboard etc. If you are looking for future proof laptop then this one is for you, easily upgradable with relatively low cost and effort.

So you may ask How easy it is to upgrade Asus Vivobook X510UQR? All i can promise that it will take you about 20 minutes and just a little bit of money to increase laptops RAM and SSD/HDD. Follow tutorial below to see how to open and upgrade your Vivobook.

 

How to open Asus Vivobook X510

  • You will need standard phillips screwdriver to remove all the screws
  • 2 screws are hidden under rubber pads, see image below

Once screws are removed you are ready to remove back panel, i recommend using something made out of plastic so you would minimize chance to damage your laptop.

 

What can i upgrade?

  • You can upgrade DDR4 RAM up to 32GB
  • M.2 SSD to any size you desire
  • 2.5" Hard Drive or SSD

Upgrading Asus Vivobook X510UQR RAM

Disconnect battery before you start removing any of the components from the motherboard.

Ram upgrade is very simple and straight forward, this laptop had 8GB DDR4 RAM already installed so i will just add additional 8GB of RAM, in total this machine will have 16GB after i'm finished with upgrade.

SK hynix 8GB 1Rx8 PC4-2400T-SA1-11 is ram what im using, you can google them if looking to buy same one, see image below:

 

How to install additional HDD/SSD to the Vivobook X510

To install 2.5" hard drive or solid state drive you will have to remove HDD caddy attached with 4 screws, also you will need 4 screws to install HDD to caddy, these screws are not included and you will have to purchase them separately if you already don't have them.

In this case i will fit 2.5" normal spinning HDD just for some additional storage because laptop already have 256GB M.2 SSD for operating system, see image below of the HDD upgrade:

 

How to remove M.2 SSD from Asus Vivobook

As i installed additional 2.5" hard drive for storage before then i'm not going to upgrade M.2 SSD and will just show you how it looks and mention possible SSD upgrade option for Asus Vivobook X510UQR.

If you are looking for 500GB M.2 SSD for this laptop then this would be good: Western Digital WDS500G2B0B WD Blue 3D NAND Internal SSD M.2 SATA, 500GB
